The College of William & Mary (W&M), located in Williamsburg, is best known as a liberal-arts school, but also has high-performing, relevant research activities in disciplines ranging from wetlands geology to proteomics.
The College is home to an unusual research culture, with the emphasis on quality over quantity. Certainly, research at William & Mary is conducted on a much smaller scale than at the nation’s research “powerhouses”. By the same token, the intimate scale of William & Mary research has freed faculty from the impersonal institutional imperatives of the research giants. Scientific collaborators and corporate partners alike are pleased by the accessibility and responsiveness that comes with working with the College’s world-class faculty.
Another element of the William & Mary research culture is the extraordinarily high level of involvement of undergraduates in contributory research—which not only advances the state of knowledge of science and society but also fosters the students’ skills and capabilities. This undergraduate involvement is, of course, beneficial to the students involved, but it also creates a more cost-effective and efficient research environment and likely imbues each project with youthful enthusiasm and insight.
