Centrally located on the U.S. East Coast, our integrated transportation system of highways, railroads, airports and seaports ensures that you can reach every one of your markets and get shipments from suppliers more efficiently.

Virginia's Transportation Assets

  • Virginia's highway system features more than 70,000 miles of interstate, primary and secondary roads, including six major interstate routes: I-95, I-85, I-81, I-77, I-66 and I-64.

  • 14 railroads operate on more than 3,500 miles of railway in Virginia, of which more than 3,100 miles are Class I. Two of the nation's largest railroads operate in Virginia: CSX Corporation and Norfolk Southern Corporation, which is headquartered in Norfolk.

  • 14 commercial airports serve Virginia, including two of the nation's largest: Washington Dulles International and Ronald Reagan Washington National. Virginia airports also offer scheduled commercial airline service provided to 145 non-stop destinations around the world.

  • The Port of Virginia offers one of the largest intermodal networks on the East Coast, handling 1.9 million TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) in 2011, and moving more than 30% of its total cargo by rail.

  • Due to natural harbor depth and Suez-class cranes, the Port of Virginia is the only East Coast location capable of handling post-Panamax vessels as first port of call

  • The Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal serves as an intermodal collection point for containers from West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia and elsewhere.

  • The Port of Richmond is a multi-modal freight and distribution center located on the James River, offering superior distribution and rail transshipment location at I-95 / I-64 / I-85 convergence.

  • Virginia offers six foreign trade zones designed to encourage businesses to participate in international trade by effectively eliminating or reducing customs duties. Also, numerous subzones are provided and additional subzones can be designated to enhance the trade capabilities of specific companies.

  • Norfolk Southern's Heartland Corridor project was completed in September 2010 and clears the way for double-stack freight trains to travel directly from Norfolk to Chicago via Columbus, Ohio. The new route is nearly 250 miles shorter and improves transit times from 4 days to 3 days.

  • A new double-stack rail service that expands the Port of Virginia's reach into Central North Carolina - an important and growing Southeastern market - was launched by Norfolk Southern in October 2011. The rail extends from Greensboro to Charlotte, Atlanta and Memphis providing owners with an alternative to the truck market out of ports in the South Carolina and Georgia region.

  • CSX announced in October 2011 that it will offer internatioal container service that will link the Port of Virginia to the railroad's intermodal ramp in Northwest Ohio via the National Gateway.
